Busy and Building - Change to A Busy Year

July 2018

Our new fiscal year has just begun as of July 1, 2018, which means it’s a good time to take stock of how the last year went and what we have to look forward to this year.

As everyone in the film industry knows, it has been a very busy year for Utah! 18 projects filmed in Utah this past year, creating over 1,900 jobs and spending $79 million in the state on Utah wages, equipment, locations, hotels, food and transportation. We currently have three made-in-Utah television series on major networks Disney Channel (Andi Mack), Paramount (Yellowstone) and CW Network (The Outpost) as well as a runaway hit with the 2018 Sundance Film Festival sensation, Hereditary.
This momentum shows little signs of letting up. All three series have renewed for another season in Utah and we also have seven new independent features that will shoot here over the next few months. We’re doing the best we can to hold on to incentive funds in order to continue to encourage production throughout the year, particularly for smaller films and local projects. Our office is committed to supporting a variety of projects of different sizes and types, creating a diverse and creative industry in the state.

The Story is Utah: THE OUTPOST

In our last newsletter we spoke about the The Outpost, which is now airing its 10-episode run on Tuesday nights on the CW Network. It will also have its international debut on several different SyFy Channel regional networks in the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Latin America on August 13th. Take a look behind the scenes of the new series and learn why the creators chose Utah for their production.

Location of the Month: Utah Film Studios

Utah Film Studios has been the home of many productions since their doors opened in 2015. With attached production offices and three sound stages at 15,000 square feet each (stages 2 and 3 can be combined to make one large stage), the studio has shown it can accommodate a variety of productions, from music videos to features and TV shows.

Several highly acclaimed films and network shows that filmed in Utah, have used the studios for their production including Damsel, Hereditary and Yellowstone. Utah Film Studios is located in Park City and is the largest sound stage facility in the state. Their team is dedicated to assist with all production types interested in using the space.

Welcome New Team Members

We've added two new team members to our staff. Syd Smoot, our new Film Office Coordinator, is a Utah native and is overjoyed to be apart of the UFC. She joined the Film Commission after working for the past couple of years at the Sundance Institute. John Holliday is the new Locations Assistant and is a current student at UVU pursuing a degree in Digital Cinema. He formerly worked at Fox 13 as a Studio Technician.
