Three New Productions Approved to Film in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (March 9, 2023) – Today, the Utah Film Commission announced the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity Board approval of 3 new productions for state film incentives, generating an estimated economic impact of $8.4 million and creating approximately 1,075 jobs.
A Tree Fell in the Woods, an independent feature from writer/director Nora Kirkpatrick was approved for the Motion Picture Incentive Program. “I’d been dreaming of shooting this film in Utah since I wrote it. The combination of the aesthetic of homes in Utah with the dense exterior woods and late melting snow, make shooting in Utah the perfect home for our film,” said Kirkpatrick. The production will spend an estimated $2.2 million in the state and will begin shooting in May.
A new thriller, Image of You from the producers of 2022’s Falling for Christmas was approved for the Motion Picture Incentive Program and begins shooting in May with an estimated spend of $3 million in the state.
The popular series from Dallas Jenkins, The Chosen returns this summer to Utah to film season 4 in and around Utah County. “We love filming in Utah. It’s a beautiful place to bring the story of Jesus to life,” commented Brad Pelo, president of The Chosen. The production will create 450 jobs and spend approximately $3.2 million in the state.

As part of the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the Utah Film Commission markets the entire state as a destination for film, television, and commercial production by promoting the use of professional local crew and talent, support services, Utah locations, and the Motion Picture Incentive Program. Thousands of productions have been filmed in Utah, including Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, Thelma & Louise, and 127 Hours, to name only a few. Many episodic series have also been filmed in Utah, such as Yellowstone, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and Westworld.
